Workshop On Developments in Biomass Derived Fuels – Bioenergy Based Bioeconomy
(Including Third Generation
Biofuel – Algal Biofuels)
(August 1 – 2, 2012) at IIT Delhi
Under the Aegis of
Foundation for Innovation & Technology Transfer, (FITT), IIT Delhi
PROGRAMME OVERVIEW, COVERAGE
AND OBJECTIVES
Oil prices had sky rocketed beyond $ 120/barrel. This has once again focused the world attention on the fact that Oil reserves are limited. Coal is a major fuel for power generation. In fact, fossil fuels supply almost 90% of primary energy in the world. There is a growing concern for mainly five things: (1) Growing interest of Business Organizations in Renewable Energy Sources including bioenergy to meet the rising Power Shortages, Bio-economy (2) Horrendous environmental effects including climate change due to rising CO2 emissions, (3) Rising oil, coal and other fossil fuel prices, (4) Developing shortage of limited good quality fossil fuels, (5) Thrust on Third generation biofuels – Algal biofuels and establishing of bioeconomy.
Environmental damages due to the increase in use of fossil fuels is threatening the very existence of humanity. Whereas, the nations are concerned about their energy securities and maintaining economic progress, still the Energy – Environment – Ecology – Efficiency – Economics i.e, 5 Es are related. The world is looking towards the only hope i.e. Biomass and other Renewable Energy Sources for Power Generation and for supplies of fuels for transportation and other energy needs to take care of growing energy shortages and for sustainable development. There is a need to make first generation to third generation biofuels affordable and
sustainable Current emphasis has also been mainly placed on rendering algal biofuels affordable for the production of biodiesel,
bioethanol, biogas etc.. In fact amongst renewable energy sources biomass is the unique source which can completely replace the role of fossil fuels to obtain not only cleaner fuels but also chemical feedstocks for chemical and petrochemical industries. Therefore thrust on establishing bio economy is increasing world over, especially in USA and EU.
The following topics would be covered.
Developments in Renewable
Energy Sources for Power
Generation for replacement of
fossil fuels.
Biofuels such as biodiesel and
biogasonline
Biomass derived fuels such as bioethanol,
biobutanol, biohydrogen
etc.
